Evaluating Local Git Remotes as Substitutes for GitHub in AI Agent Testing

A recent post on Microsoft DevBlogs investigates whether local Git remotes can reliably replace GitHub when evaluating AI coding agents. During testing, core operations like rebasing and pushing upon explicit request performed identically regardless of the remote environment. However, behavioral differences emerged in autonomous operations, where agents pushed code independently 11 percentage points less frequently when using a local remote compared to GitHub.

Comparison
| Aspect | Before / Alternative | After / This |
|---|---|---|
| Rebasing and requested pushes | Performed as expected on GitHub remotes | Remains unaffected on local Git remotes |
| Autonomous push frequency | Higher frequency of agent-initiated pushes on GitHub | Decreased by 11 percentage points on local remotes |
