GitHub Copilot Deprecates GPT-4.1 Model Across All Copilot Experiences

GitHub has removed support for the GPT-4.1 model across all GitHub Copilot features, including Copilot Chat, inline editing, ask mode, agent mode, and code completion. This deprecation took effect on June 1, 2026. All users must update their workflows, custom integrations, and configurations to target currently supported, newer model alternatives. Organization administrators managing GitHub Enterprise accounts need to review their Copilot model policies immediately. If access to alternative models was not previously enabled, administrators must explicitly allow them in the settings console. Individual users can verify model availability within their personal Copilot configuration panels to ensure continued access. This deprecation may impact existing custom prompt engineering, developer tooling integrations, or legacy workflows optimized specifically for GPT-4.1.
